BMAF Road Relay Age Groups

The M35 age group is now well established, and the single M35-39 age group has become an anomaly in 10 year age group Relay Races.

The BMAF Executive have received a proposal that from 2011, the age groups for MEN replicate those for WOMEN and the age groupings under EVAA Non-Stadia Team Rules for Road events, namely M35-44, M45-54 etc.

The decision will be taken at the BMAF AGM in July, but all clubs taking part in the Road Relays on May 15th are being asked their opinion. A voting form can be downloaded here.

Bill Kingsbury announces retirement

At the recent Welsh Masters’ Annual Awards Dinner, Bill Kingsbury MBE, announced that he would be retiring from competition, and taking a much less active participation in the sport. Bill made it clear that for a number of reasons, not the least some serious health issues over the summer, he was bringing his participation in his beloved sport of Athletics to a close.

It is difficult to convey in a satisfactory manner exactly what Bill has contributed not only to Masters Athletics, but to Athletics in general, particularly in Wales and specifically to his beloved Rhondda AC. He has produced hundreds of Welsh Champions across all the age groups. However it is clear that from the very beginning of his sporting career as a ‘boy soldier’ and Army PTI, through the dozens of British Masters throwing records along the journey to his current 82 years of age, the nature and depth of the man’s knowledge, his determination, his dedication to his sport and particularly to those he coached, and specifically his belief in the integrity and respect that the athlete should display to others within the sport and to the sport of Athletics itself, were absolutely outstanding. He was particularly concerned that those in our sport should not only recognise special performances of excellence, but that they should also understand and respect the dedication and commitment that such athletes had to devote to their event in order to achieve that level of success. Behind his obvious geniality and natural ability to communicate with anyone, all of these core attributes always shone through

Bill Kingsbury is often described as a legend amongst those within the Welsh Masters fraternity, and within Welsh Athletics generally. While Bill himself might say that this description was inappropriate, as he was more interested in the successes of those around him, it is probably one that few within the sport in Wales would disagree with.

The above is taken from an appreciation of Bill that will appear in full in the March edition of Masters Athletics.

IAAF Changes about Masters

Change to IAAF Rule 141 will not affect World Masters Athletics or BMAF Competitions.

The new IAAF Competition Rules Book will record the recent change to the above, to read:

“Masters Men and Women: Any athlete who has reached his/her 35th birthday for stadia events and 40th birthday for out of stadia events.”

Please note this will not in any way affect our recruiting athletes who have reached their 35th birthday, they are most welcome to join any of our clubs. A 35-39 age category will be retained in our Championships and at all the World Masters Athletics Championships, including their Non Stadia events.

There are no changes to the men’s and women’s 35-39 age category in the British & Irish Masters International Cross County; the BMAF Cross Country Championships, the popular Road Relays or any other team event. The women’s team format remain unchanged.

Latest from Lahti

After six days competition British Masters athletes continue to win World age group titles. Sunday was very much Ladies Day as the ex-Scottish international, Sandra Branny, set a cracking pace in the women's 55-59 age group 5000m lapping all her opponents to win in 18.38.82. Just days short of her 60th birthday, Ros Tabor from Dulwich, London, followed her home to take the bronze. Ever green Ilford schoolteacher, Pam Jones, was second in the W70 5000m category and it was another 3rd place for W40 Nicky Nealon. A silver medal went to the Gloucester hurdler, Jane Horder, and a silver for Mark Wiseman in a tough M40 Discus competition. On Monday Nina Anderson successfully defended her World W35 800m title, John Gercs won the men's 40-44 800m race in 1.57.50sec and Joe Lloyd added to the medals winning the M35 400m hurdles in a brisk 54.29 from fellow Brit Richard Scott. The heats of the 1500m races saw the majority of British runners through to Thursday's finals.

Anti-doping Rules

New WMA Anti-doping Rules and TUE Regulations have been produced. They are based on the rules of the IAAF and these are on the WMA website (and this site's Anti-Doping page) for anyone to view. The WMA General Assembly will be asked to adopt these rules, so anyone with views of changes to them should let the BMAF secretary know as soon as possible so that the points can be put to the BMAF executive and any proposals made to WMA by the 7th May. Whilst looking at any possible change it will need to be borne in mind that these new rules have been agreed by the IAAF with WMA for Masters Athletics, and they must also be read with the IAAF and WMA Anti-Doping Regulations (TUE Guidelines).

International Competitions

Following the paragraph in the latest Masters magazine from the Chairman’s report on the European Masters Games (EMG) in Malmo, SWEDEN. This is a clarification on the position on athletes that may enter the competition.

Athletes are able to enter the EMG, and will not be debarred from entering any other competitions.

The entries are made directly to the organiser and they do not ask for confirmation from BMAF. Athletes are responsible for their entries.

BMAF will not take the entries and would not deal with any problems that may arise, (anti-doping, misconduct, injuries, losses etc). As we generally have to do these in the events that are entered through us.

It is advised that athletes make sure they have medical cover just in case of injury or health issue.

Multiple awards for Arthur Thomson

The British Athletic Supporters Club has awarded Arthur Thompson the Master Athlete of the Year Award for his outstanding walking achievements at the British and European Championships.

Earlier he was elected European Best Male Veteran Athlete for 2006. He has earned this award by setting 3 World Records: 20km Road Walk ( 1.56.44), 30km Road Walk (2.52.47) and 5000m Track Walk (26.01.52). The citation outlines his superiority to other veterans in his age group and the fact that he has outclassed the old records.

In EVACS in Poznan, Poland 2006, in the oppressive warmth (30-35 degrees), Arthur broke his compatriot James Grimwade's classic M70 record for the 20 km Road Walk of 1.58.10 from Malmö 1986 with a phenomenal 1.56.44. In the British Masters Championships in Birmingham, just before Poznan, Arthur broke the 24 year old M70 World Record for the 5000m Race Walk of the Australian T Daintry of 27.02 with 26.01.52. In Poznan he produced a championship record of 26.34.87. In Coventry in August 2006 Arthur set a record of 2.52.47 in 30km Road Walk. The previous record belonged to Albert Sturni of France at 3.05.10 set in 1993.

Arthur was also nominated for World Male Master Athlete of the year, which went instead to the American Bill Collins. Melitta Czerwenka-Nagel of Germany won both European and World Female awards.

Men aged 35-39

At the IAAF Congress in Helsinki on 3 August 2005, delegates voted in favour of lowering the age of men master athletes to age 35. The BMAF welcomes the move.

Excellent run by Tracey Morris in the Olympics

BVAF changes name to British Masters Athletic Federation

At the AGM of the BVAF, held after the completion of the first day's events of the Track & Field Championships on July 27th 2002, a motion to change the Federation's name to replace "Veterans" with "Masters" was carried with a clear majority.

Chris Maddocks Earns Ovation in Sydney

A British vet achieved the distinction of completing his fifth Olympic race, when he competed in the 50k walk in Sydney. Chris Maddocks, who is a member of Plymouth City Walkers and South West Vets, was the only BVAF affiliated athlete competing at Sydney.

Chris was unfortunate enough to pick up a hamstring problem during the later stages of his preparations, which affected him from early on in the race. This explains why he was nearly an hour slower than the time he achieved earlier in the year. Nevertheless he battled on and received a huge reception when he eventually made it into the stadium.
